When you smoke, it damages your immune system and reduces your body’s defenses against infections such as coronavirus (COVID-19).

Therefore, smokers are at greater risk:

  • get serious respiratory infections
  • infections that last longer and are more serious than non-smokers

It’s never too late to quit, and as soon as you quit, your body begins to repair itself.

Stop smoking drugs

Nicotine is extremely addictive, and this is the main reason why people struggle to stop smoking.

Your Live Life Better Derbyshire consultant will talk about medications to stop smoking and help you choose the right product.

We offer two different drugs to stop smoking – nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) and Vareniklin, known as Champix. Detailed information is added to this page.

NRT is a drug that gives you a small amount of nicotine, but does not contain resin, carbon monoxide and other chemicals in tobacco smoke.

This can help reduce the side effects of smoking cessation, such as the bad mood and desire that can occur when you quit smoking.

NRT is available in a number of forms, including patches, chewing gum, inhalers, and oral sprays.

Varenicline, brand name Champix, is a drug that works in two ways.

Like NRT, it reduces nicotine cravings, while also blocking the rewarding and invigorating effects of smoking.

This is a prescription drug only and your doctor should evaluate your suitability for use.

To quit smoking, your counselor will discuss with you which product is better for you to quit smoking.

Electronic cigarettes

There are currently no prescription e-cigarettes, so Live Life Better Derbyshire does not currently offer e-cigarettes to its customers.

Consultants can only discuss licensed medications. However, if you want to use e-cigarettes, we can still offer support to help you set a release date and stop.

Additional information is available on the NHS Smokefree website.
